New Membership Guidelines 2024

REMINDER:

 In January 2024, we will begin to mail the annual membership renewals.  The new systems is as follows.  You will receive a renewal by mail and have until April 30, 2024 to return it.  After April, the Board will contact members not renewing and see they can assist.  If a current member does not renew by April 30th of a renewal year, they will be removed from the membership role and no longer receive any membership benefits.

On the renewals, it will ask to update any information that may have changed, such as email or phone numbers. It will also ask how you would like to receive the Blockhouse Bulletin (email or US mail) and how you would like to receive your renewal notices in the future. We are trying to reduce the cost of mailings due to the ever rising cost of postage.

With the money we save we can place it into further preservation of the museums and the collections. Thank you for your support as always.

Christmas Open House

 On December 2, 2023, we will be open for our annual  Christmas Display and gathering.  Stop by and partake in the organ music, food, and refreshments while you enjoy the Open House and Gift Shop.

November Events

 Hello - Our November Events will kick off with our annual Veterans Day Salute beginning at 10am.  Come tour the Museum and see our display.

Quarterly Meeting and Halloween Events

We have events each month at the Museum so please stop in and see us!  As always, we are open by appointment also.  Please see the calendar below with the dates and times of our events.  

At our Quarterly Meeting, we will have a guest speaker Sharon SanAngelo to speak about her book "They Brought Tarnished Secrets".

On Halloween, we will be handing out candy to the children at the Brick Church Museum.

WALKING THROUGH HISTORY - Cemetery Tour on October 2nd at 11am

 A tour of the Maple Grove Cemetery in Clyde will occur on Saturday, October 2nd. The tour will start at 11 a.m.

Hugh Miner, Town and Village Historian, and Nicole Malbone, Galen Historical Society President, will lead walkers, while maintaining social distancing, past the gravestones of many of the people who made history in the Galen/Clyde area. Veterans, public officials, and entrepreneurs are some of the people whose stories will be recounted.

Parking is available near the entrance to the Cemetery, which is located on the south side of the village. Off Route 414, south of the bridge over the Canal, take the first eastward road and bend around the hill for less than a mile and the Cemetery will be in view.

Masks are encouraged.

We're Opening and Will Have Upcoming Events! We have missed seeing everyone and look forward to opening the Museum for our Summer Hours on July 7th! We have been hard at work reorganizing and getting the Museums ready for you to visit. We are selling our Gift Shop items at the BLG Co-Op located on Glasgow Street and at our Brick Church Museum during business hours. Below are the upcoming events through the rest of the year. We hope to see you soon!

 

PUBLIC NOTICE

Until further notice, the Galen Historical Society will be re-opening, by appointment only, with the following restrictions:

• Hand sanitizer will be available to the public at the front desk.
• Visitors will be allowed in the by appointment with the following restrictions:
• Number of people allowed inside at one time is at the discretion of the Docent.
• Visitors and Docents will be required to wear masks while in the office and remain 6 feet apart.
• Visitors will not touch and exhibits.
• The Public Bathroom will be closed, until further notice.
• Everyone entering the building will need to be logged in. Sanitization wipes are available for the pen.

 

The Galen Historical Society will be resuming our normal operating schedule barring any unforeseen events, as soon as it is safe to do so.

Quarterly Meeting - On April 27, 2020 at 6:30pm, there will be a quarterly meeting held at the Brick Church Museum.  There will be a meeting followed by refreshments and presentation on“Burned over district from 1790-1860”, religious upheaval in the Finger Lakes region and the progressive reform movements that followed."  Come on out and visit.  We look forward to seeing you.  

On March 8th from 12pm to 3pm the Girl Scouts will have their Girl Scout display up in the Brick Church Museum.  This display celebrates the Girl Scout history.  Please stop over and visit. 

Quarterly Meeting - January 27, 2020 at 6:30pm

On January 27, 2020 at 6:30pm, there will be a quarterly meeting held at the Brick Church Museum.  There will be a meeting followed by refreshments and presentation on "Anstee Acres: A Cash Crop Farm".  This is the third part of the agriculture series produced by Steve Groat and narrated by Hugh Miner.  We look forward to seeing you.

Summer 2019 Museum Open Hours & Display

Folks of the Galen Historical Society in Clyde have been working very hard to create a new display for their summer visitors at the Brick Church Museum. The exhibit will feature pictures and artifacts of downtown retailers in the mid-20th century. As in most small villages, the bustling sidewalks and thriving businesses have been hurt by the big retail chains, shopping malls and online shopping. This exhibit will give us a glimpse of what we have lost. Anyone who has pictures of downtown Clyde, the merchants, or artifacts of the old businesses and would be willing to loan or donate them to enhance the exhibit should call Hugh Miner at 315-923-4841.

The museum will be open on Wednesdays from 1 to 3 and during the Community Market on Thursdays from 3 to 6 starting on June 19 and ending on September 12.

Girl Scout Displays at Brick Church Museum for 2019

Not too busy on Saturday morning March 16th? Why not stop at the Brick Church Museum from 10am until 1pm and check out this year's Girl Scout displays? These clever and interesting exhibits cover topics from GS history to camping to how Girl Scouts enhances the lives of its members. Terri Williams will be happy to say hello and answer all of your questions. Yeah, Girl Scouts!!

 

Galen Historical Society Presents a Show & Tell Program for January Quarterly Meeting

The Galen Historical Society is presenting a Show and Tell program for the January Quarterly meeting. Please bring your items to "show" to the membership, and the story you want to "tell" us about the items.  You can bring anything that is appropriate- nothing sexual or racially explicit- for the meeting. We prefer the items be historic and from the Galen/Clyde area, but it is not absolutely necessary. This is a good time to bring something that needs to be identified. Hopefully,  someone would know what it is and how to use it.
We are also asking the membership to vote on a change to the constitution. Every member that can attend the meeting is requested to be there for this important vote.
We hope to see you on Monday January 28th, 2019.

Christmas Open House 2018

The Galen Historical Society will be holding a Christmas Open House on Saturday December 1st, 2018, from 10am-1pm at the Brick Church Museum. There will be refreshments, Christmas music from 11am until noon played by Larry Dapolito on the Wilcox and White pump organ, and a short presentation honoring former GHS president Sharon Rice for her contributions to the historical society.
Please come in and join us as we welcome in the beginning of the holiday season. And, watch for the beautiful refurbished stained glass windows that will be lit up for the month of December!

ROC the Day 2018

Today, Tuesday November 27th, 2018, is the National Day of Giving. Once again, the Galen Historical Society is participating locally in ROC the Day through the United Way of Rochester, NY. Please consider donating to the Galen Historical Society. Your generous contributions help us to collect and preserve items and information about our local  history so that we can help visitors, students, and the local community to understand our place in  history.
This year the historical society has published a video on YouTube called "Swamp to River" about the construction of the Erie Canal and it's effect on our history. We have also erected a historical marker to honor a local Revolutionary War soldier and assisted a Congressional Medal of Honor society locate a Civil War soldier so that he can be recognized.
Please help us to continue producing programs that spotlight our local history, and to update and preserve our local museums with their amazing collections. Thank you.

Revolutionary War Veteran Honored with Sign

The Galen Historical Society has erected a historical marker sign to recognize and honor our local Revolutionary War veteran, William Vermilyea, just in time for the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day. Mr. Vermilyea was buried with family members in the White School House Cemetery on the corner of Rte. 414 north and Kelsey Rd.
The sign was purchased through the joint efforts of Tom Sawtelle, Town of Galen Supervisor Steve Groat, the Town of Galen, the Village of Clyde, and the local SOAR organization, using a historical signage grant from the Genesee Valley Educational Partnership. We are very grateful for their assistance.

GHS Veterans Day Observances

The Galen Historical Society Brick Church Museum will be open on Sunday November 11th, 2018, from 10am-12pm in honor of the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day (11/11/1918- 11/11/2018).  We will also be open on Monday November 12th,  2018, from 10am-12pm during the Federal holiday. Please stop in and view our display that honors our local veterans. We have some new and interesting donations from the Civil War. Plus, our Revolutionary War veteran, William Vermilyea, will be honored with a sign at the White School House Cemetery.

Clyde Community Sidewalk Sale

The Clyde Community Festival is featuring a community sidewalk sale on Saturday August 11th, 2018, starting at 9 am. Look for the Galen Historical Society table in front of the SOAR/Clyde SPAN office at 70 Glasgow St. We will have gift shop items, such as Clyde glass jewelry, stamp cachets, tote bags, books about local history, and vintage children toys, available for purchase.

There is also a table of GHS gift shop items for purchase during business hours in the LNB lobby. They are featuring the Galen Historical Society as the business of the month for August. 

Be sure to stop in either place and see what's for sale!!

The Case of the Disappearing Steam Engine

Did anyone notice something missing from outside of the Mill Museum in Clyde, NY? Don't worry; it was on purpose. On Saturday June 30th, 2018, thanks to Brian Howell and his new tractor, we finally managed to get the "Big Ole" Steam Engine into the basement of the Mill Museum. This is part of the historical society's efforts to clean and reorganize the Mill Museum and the wonderful agricultural exhibits.

Also assisting Steve Groat and Brian Howell was Burt Bogart (museum neighbor). Please refer to the photos for a guide to success. Don't get fooled, it wasn't as easy as the
photos look. We had three Engineers on site and that combined brain power
reduced the entry time to one hour. Again, many, many thanks the Mr. Howell!
